One thing I should let my followers know is a is that I love the Warhammer 40K universe and all of the lore associated with it.  One aspect I especially enjoy about Warhammer 40K is the dicotomy between delusions of granduer and reality when it comes to the Imperium of Man. From the inside looking out the Imperium of Man seems like this all powerful, invincible empire.  In reality it is much like Rome in the 5th century, where most of it’s real power is gone and the empire teeters on the brink of collapse.  The Imperium is said to have unlimited resources but in reality the Imperium’s economy is much like that of North Korea and most citizens live in deperate poverty. The Imperium has amazingly advanced technology but in reality most of that technology comes from a bygone golden age, and those responsible for managing that technology are a bunch of lunatics who have no real idea how it works and thus can only maintain it, not reverse engineer, improve upon it, or create new technologies. The Imperium has existed for 10,000 years and yet in all that time no significant new technologies has been developed and science is completely stagnant. The Imperium’s military is said to be nigh invincible and the Space Marines are touted as the greatest warriors in all history. In reality 99.99% of the Astra Militarum are composed of cannon fodder conscripts who are poorly armed, poorly trained, led by incompetent idiots and yes men, and practice a war doctrine similar to that of Saddam Hussein’s military in the 1990′s. Even some of the most elite units in the military, such as the Death Korps of Krieg or the Macabean Janissaries utilize pathetically outdated tactics which result in horrific casualties.  The enemies of the Imperium seem terrifying beyond belief but in reality most of them would probably be easily eradicated by any spacefaring civilization with a whole number on the Kardaschev Scale.  Take the Orks for example.  They are supposedly the greatest threat to the galaxy.  Planets infested with Ork spores will have to deal with generational waaagh’s forever.  Years ago where I live a species of caterpillar threatened to destroy certain tree species, threatening extinction of those trees. The State Department of Conservation sprayed a genetically modified bacteria on all of the forests which selectively killed the caterpillars without harming any other wildlife.  I have a hard time believing that a spacefaring galactic civilization wouldn’t have the means to develop an anti-fungal agent which could eradicate the Orks and drive them to extinction.
